dads

What is a dad? Defining something as evolving as the role of dads in society today isn't as easy as it once may have been in the 50's or 60's--or, for that matter, the 80's. So, we here at Daddy Outpost think that not only would defining the what a dad is be a good exercise, but also a wonderful idea for a contest.

It's easy to enter--all you need to do is complete the phrase, “ A Dad Is…” Read the following contest guidelines to find out more on how to enter and what's at stake:

Contest Guidelines

Welcome to the Daddy Outpost, “A Dad Is…” Contest!

To Enter

Simply complete the phrase the way you see fit in the comment section below. Make sure to include your preferred email address so we can contact you later on down the road.

Complete the phrase in any way that makes sense to you. For example, your answer can be general, “A Dad is someone to lean on,” or more specific, “A Dad is someone who helps you with a science project,” which is something my Dad did with me.

Who Can Enter

This contest is open to everyone. Dads, moms, kids, grandparent--in short, anyone can enter. You do not have to be a member of the site to enter. And there’s no limit to the number of entries you can submit. The Daddy Outpost staff will choose the winning answers. In the case of similar answers the earliest received wins.

What's the Prize?

Current plans call for us to put the winning phrases together in an illustrated page-a-day calendar that credits every author. Profits from the project will be shared by the authors.

The first entry is from my daughter Leah. According to her "A Dad Is Someone Who Gives Good Advice."

Gotta love that kid.

Thanks for entering and good luck,

Larry

A dad is... a rock. And a softie. He lives an example of hard work and respect for others. He says what he means and does what he says. He instills an unwavering commitment to discipline and whimsy. He says "I love you," with his words... and his eyes. He embraces new challenges, to show you that you never stop learning and growing. He expresses unconditional love for his wife or partner, to prove that healthy relationships make life better. He lets you know that you'll be heard, always. He lets you know that nothing you do or say will diminish his love for you. He teaches the joys of intellectual curiosity, physical activity, and practical knowledge. He never makes it look complicated or burdensome to be your dad.
A dad lets you know who he is, to give you a head start on who you want to be.

A dad is what everyone gets, automatically, by virtue of being born (forgetting parthenogenesis). What's not automatic is one who's sober, loving and supporting most of the time. If that's your dad, consider yourself lucky. If it wasn't, don't let that stop you from having kids yourself, afraid that you'll repeat a bad pattern. I hesitated for years, bit the bullet with the help of a wife who had faith in me, and worked at being a good dad. I wasn't perfect, but my kids turned out wonderful, and now are a constant source of satisfaction and happiness.

When you ask your dad to build you a bookcase for your college apartment, he does, not even blinking, as though it was the most natural thing to do. Little did you know he wasn't skilled at carpentry--but he never said no.
